Seen Dancing: My Week In Music (03/08-03/14)

This a series about music as I live it. I hope you enjoy my perspective and find some cool music at the same time. This is a conversation not a speech so please send me your thoughts and music you find interesting. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

This week:

  • Lovelight Deux (eat, Felix)
  • Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck
  • The Impossible Game
  • Office Funk
  • Jidenna "Classic Man"

Through the years I have been blessed to be surrounded by some of the most interesting and creative people God put on this good green earth. Felix the Black Cat is an example of the great folks that have crossed my path. This Activist, Businessman, Educator, Rapper, and one of my best friends, has always been a source of inspiration and motivation for my personal journey through this thing we call life.

This week he texted me his remix of a Georgia Anne Muldrow song "Lovelight Deux Feat Felix"; I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I was going to watch Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck no matter what; I love Nirvana and I trust HBO to do it right. But when I found out the film will premier a 12 minute unreleased acoustic song by Kurt; this became must see television. The documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck premiers May 4th on HBO.

My wife got me totally addicted to playing this game. It’s simple to play but challenging to win; how I like my phone games. What stands out to me the most is how motivating the music is in this game. It’s like a movie soundtrack married perfectly to the scene and action you’re actively taking a part of. It feels urgent and necessary at the same time. Well Done.

I work in a cubicle universe filled with mini fiefdoms run by overworked warlords; yeah it’s a mess. The one positive note is you get to see 75 square feet of personality. If nothing else proves how diverse we are as Americans, it is our personal workspace. A sanctuary of limited corporate freedom tied with enough rope to hang yourself; Monday through Friday from 9 to 5.

Despite our differences the one thing we have in common is a love for music. The problem is we don't share a love for the same music. The warlords in my universe came to an informal and unstated agreement that we will always play old school R&B and 70's funk during the work day; somehow it works.

My Brother in Law, Grealin Kimbrough, put me up on this artist who definitely has a great sartorial flair. Jidenna calls his music swank and defies modern Hip Hop aesthetic; all well sounding current. I'm waiting to hear more from this artist to see how he develops musically. The decisions he made so far style-wise and the company he keeps (Janelle Monae) definitely has him on my radar.
