The N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton was the number one film in America this weekend, raking in an estimated $56.1 million from Friday through Sunday.
According to Reuters, Straight Outta Compton had the biggest August weekend opening ever for an R-rated film, surpassing American Pie 2, which made $45 million its first weekend back in 2001.
The promotion for this highly anticipated film was handled extremely well. A fact that no doubt helped the already buzz worthy film make even a bigger impact.
Couple the great promotion with the rash of publicized killing of blacks at the hand of police officers, making the film even a more timely depiction of what minorities are dealing with in America; despite N.W.A having debuted over 25 years ago.
“The movie tapped into something in our culture and that made it more of a must-see,” said box office analyst Phil Contrino.
Unfortunately much of what they talked about in '88 still rings true today. And just like in the 80's black misery is still profitable for those who sell it.
