Black Mass is set in South Boston in the 1970s where FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) talks Irish mobster James "Whitey" Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the government agency to eliminate the Italian mob. This movie tells the true story of how Whitey was able to use this alliance that spiraled out of control to become one of the most powerful and ruthless gangsters in the history of Boston. His affiliation with the FBI allowed him to evade the law and consolidate his power in the Boston underworld. His reign of invincibility ended in 1994 when the feds were working to get an indictment on him under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). He was tipped off by his former FBI handler and spent the next 16 years of his life on the run. On June 22, 2011 he was arrested in Santa Monica, CA and extradited to Massachusetts where he was convicted on 31 of 32 counts and was found to be involved in 11 of 19 murders the prosecutors thought him complicit in.
Black Mass directed by Scott Cooper (Out of the Furnace, Crazy Heart) and written by Jez Butterworth (Edge of Tomorrow, Get on Up) and newcomer Mark Mallouk. Warner Bros. will release the film September 18th this year.
