Despite a reputation for casually hooking up millennials (people born between 1980 and 1999) will have fewer sex partners in their lifetime than their parents. This according to a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior by San Diego State University.
Researchers analyzed 40 years of sexual data from over 33,000 Americans for the study. They found on average millennials will have sex with eight different partners. This compared to 10 for Generation X (people born between 1960 and 1980) and 12 different partners for baby boomers (people born between 1940 and 1960).
According to lead study researcher Jean Twenge, PhD millennials tended to be overprotected by their parents which could play a role in the attitude they have towards sex. " “They were the first to be put in car seats as babies, their parents wouldn’t let them walk to school alone … they may have learned to be more cautious about sex from their upbringing,”
Though millennials have fewer partners they are more likely to have had casual sex. The study also found they are, as a group, more accepting of premarital sex than their more partner having elders.
