San Diego Film Festival

The San Diego Film Festival is one of the fastest growing Festivals in the country. We have two luxury screening venues: Reading Cinemas Gaslamp Quarter and Arclight Cinemas La Jolla (UTC) and an extraordinary lineup of high powered and  little known independent films from around the world and as well, studio films that are already generating plenty of awards buzz. And while we’re on the subject, this is the Festival to see Academy Award winning films before they were nominated — for the past two years.12 Years a Slave, August: Osage County and Silver Linings Playbook were all screened here at the San Diego Film Festival. See it here first!

This is the region’s premier showcase for award-winning independent films, studio premieres and director interviews — all against the backdrop of America’s Finest City. For film lovers and enthusiasts, it just doesn’t get any better.

The Film Festival is just the beginning. The mission of the San Diego Film Foundation is to support independent filmmaking all year through screenings and events, developing film programs in local schools and driving the development of local filmmaking here in San Diego.

Attend the San Diego Film Festival and help us fulfill our mission of bringing the best independent filmmakers from around the world to our screens — and our beautiful city.

DJ Logic and The Earful

Cover:

Turntable maestro DJ Logic (real name Jason Kibler) is widely credited for helping to bring jazz into hip-hop's sphere of influence. Hailing from the Bronx, he kicked off his adventures on the decks in the 1980s by playing at local community events. The next decade, however, saw him growing rapidly in stature as a pro musician. First he joined the group Eye & I, performing with such bands as Living Color and Body Count. He then hooked up with talented jazz trio MMW (keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood), touring heavily and working on the celebrated Combustication record. He released his debut album, the aptly titled Project Logic, to wide critical acclaim in 1999. Two years later, he was again collecting plaudits en masse after putting out the cutting-edge Anomaly album. Logic surfaced alongside guitarist Vernon Reid in 2002 for Front End Lifter, a fun, adventurous album the two recorded as Yohimbe Brothers and then toured behind late in the year. Nominated for Best Jazz Artist 2013 in the San Diego Music Awards, The Earful is a high powered, in your face, shake your booty machine that will funk you just right.
Formed in late 2008, The Earful touches on various styles of the funk in all of its forms and pays tribute to the masters. Having shared the stage with amazing talent such as Soulive, Level 42, Groundation, Orgone, The Aggrolites and Les Nubians, they bring a paint peeling, barn burning intensity that is unforgettable. The all star lineup features members of The Mars Volta, The Devastators, and B-Side Players. With heavy sound of the Hammond Organ, the funky bass lines, and the stabbing brass hits, this 7 piece group are sure to get your rump bumpin'.

The Foreign Exchange

Representative of how the Internet can aid in creating music, the Foreign Exchange started when Little Brother rapper Phonte heard a beat on Okayplayer.com by Dutch producer Nicolay and asked if he could lay some vocals over it. Nicolay agreed, and the song "Light It Up" appeared shortly after as the B-side to Little Brother's 2002 single "Whatever You Say." Relying mainly on instant messaging and email, the duo continued to work together, with Nicolay sending beats to Phonte, who would add vocals and send them back until they had enough tracks together to form an album. Not once during the entire process of making their debut, Connected, which came out in 2004, did the members of the Foreign Exchange speak over the phone or in person. Due in part to an increasing production load, Nicolay moved to the States, and Leave It All Behind, the second FE album -- more R&B-oriented than the debut -- was recorded. Released in 2008 and featuring a handful of stunning videos, its lead single, "Daykeeper," was nominated for a 2010 Grammy in the category of Best Urban/Alternative Performance (and lost to India.Arie's "Pearls"). After assisting two of their associates, YahZarah (The Ballad of Purple St. James) and Zo! (SunStorm), with albums, the Foreign Exchange released Authenticity. All three albums were issued in 2010 through The Foreign Exchange Music. A DVD/CD set, Dear Friends: An Evening with the Foreign Exchange (2011) and a two-disc set of remixes and new songs titled The Reworks (2013) preceded the group's fourth studio album, Love in Flying Colors.
